Team Spotlight: Palak Dhawan on the Role of a Lead Consultant at Fabric

As a Lead Consultant, Palak plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between client needs and our technical solutions. Her journey, expertise, and approach to leadership make her an invaluable asset to our team. Join us as we delve into Palak’s professional journey, her insights on what makes a successful consultant, and what drives her both inside and outside of work.

Tell us about what you do at Fabric?

At Fabric, I serve as a Delivery Lead. My primary responsibilities include managing the delivery of projects from inception to completion. This involves working very closely with customers to understand their unique business problems and helping them solve these complex issues using tailored tech solutions. I facilitate the definition of business requirements and assist in designing minimum viable products (MVPs) that meet the customers' needs. Additionally, I collaborate extensively with my delivery team to ensure they fully comprehend the business use cases. By explaining the requirements in detail and shaping the solution together, I ensure that the final product aligns with the customer's expectations and business goals.

What was your journey like before Fabric?

Before joining Fabric, my career journey was diverse and enriching. Starting as a Software Engineer at HCL Technologies in India, I quickly transitioned to a role in business analysis, driven by a passion for understanding client needs. Working with enterprise clients like American Express provided valuable experience in managing complex requirements.

I then joined an Australia-based tech startup specializing in mobile app development for entrepreneurs. Here, I honed my skills in product design and led product strategy workshops, deepening my understanding of customer needs and solutions.

Transitioning to Thoughtworks in India, I immersed myself in agile practices and delivery methodologies. This experience was pivotal, allowing me to work with the UK’s largest out-of-home advertising company, where I applied agile principles to deliver impactful solutions.

Upon relocating to Australia, I engaged with major enterprises and government clients such as the Department of Education-Victoria, GPT Group, and the Australian Energy Market Operator. These roles further expanded my expertise in delivering tailored tech solutions to diverse and high-profile clients.

What skills or experiences have you found most valuable in your career?

The most valuable skills in my career have been effective communication, problem-solving, and project management. Being able to communicate complex technical concepts in a way that is understandable to non-technical stakeholders has been crucial. Additionally, experiences such as leading cross-functional teams, managing stakeholder expectations, and working directly with clients to define business requirements have greatly shaped my professional development. These skills and experiences enable me to bridge the gap between business needs and technical solutions effectively.

How do you see your role evolving in the next few years?

In the next few years, I see my role evolving to include more strategic responsibilities, such as driving larger-scale projects and initiatives. I hope to continue expanding my expertise in tech solutions and business strategy, ultimately contributing to Fabric's growth and success by implementing innovative solutions for our clients. Additionally, I aim to take on a mentorship role, guiding and developing the next generation of Delivery Leads on the Fabric Team.

What advice would you give to an aspiring Lead Consultant?

My advice to aspiring Lead Consultants would be to focus on deeply understanding the client's needs and building strong relationships with both clients and your delivery team. It's crucial to stay curious, continuously learn, and be adaptable to changing business environments. Always prioritise the client's business goals and work collaboratively with your team to achieve the best outcomes.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and playing with my 2-year-old toddler. If there is any time left for myself, I love working out, swimming, and dancing. I particularly enjoy learning new dance forms. Over the past ten years, I have learned dance forms such as Salsa, Bachata, Bhangra, and Freestyle. I was also a Zumba instructor at one point in my life.

If I weren’t in tech, I would have definitely become a fitness/dance instructor.

If you were to get stranded on a deserted island with one person from Fabric, who would you want it to be?

If I were stranded on a deserted island, I would want to be with Isabella because of her cool and composed nature. I guess we would just chill on the island, drink some bubbles, and talk about our babies. 🙂

If you were to explain your role as the Delivery Lead, what movie title would describe it the best?

If I had to describe my role as the Delivery Lead with a movie title, it would be "The Negotiator." My job involves balancing the needs and expectations of our clients with the capabilities and timelines of our delivery team. I act as a mediator, ensuring that both sides are aligned and working towards a common goal.
